Hair Dyeing at Home - Tips & Advice
Now, hair dyeing at home is a choice of many women. Either for financial reasons or due to time constraints, many of us choose to dye our hair from the shot of our house, drinking our coffee while relaxing or sorting out pending and household chores.
Although there is a wide variety in hair dyes both in terms of shades and in terms of dye types and ingredients, the process has several secrets in order to be successful.
How to dye your hair at home
Starting things off, the most important step is to buy the right paint and all the essentials. This means that it is important to have a brush and gloves, which are often included in the paint box. Additionally, make sure you have a towel, a comb or brush, and loose clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.
If you have carpets on the floor or if you simply don't want to accidentally get it dirty, you can lay some bags that you don't need.
For the shade you choose, don't rely solely on the model's hair color on the box. Make sure you ask an expert or consult a color chart before buying the paint.
Then pour the paint into the bowl and mix it with the brush or other plastic utensil. Avoid using metal utensils, either a bowl or a stirrer, because there is a risk of oxidizing your paint, causing its color to change. Another reason to avoid using metal utensils is because this material reacts when it comes into contact with the oxygen that the paint will contain with the risk of negative consequences for your skin.
Before applying your dye, protect the skin around your hair with a lip balm or by applying petroleum jelly, to easily remove the color that you will inevitably get dirty with.
After mixing the dye mixture very well, carefully comb and untangle your hair, in order not to make it difficult to apply the dye due to possible knots and tangled hairs.
Go into a four-part parting of your hair in a cross shape. That is, start by parting your hair in two parts from the forehead to the nape of the neck, then part your hair horizontally at the level of the ears.
Starting the coloring from the roots of the hair, start from one of the 4 parts where you have parted your hair. For the back of the hair, you can use an extra mirror, to know exactly where you are dyeing. Once you are done with all 4 parts, continue massaging the roots to spread the color well.
Continue painting the edges. This can be done either by using a brush or by applying the color by hand. A good massage, after all the paint has been applied, will help the best drape at this stage as well.
An optional step is to wear a cap or just plastic wrap after applying the dye. The heat that will be created will contribute to the better penetration of the dye pigments into the hair and thus the color will come out richer and brighter.
After waiting as long as the company recommends, the dye should then be removed from the hair with a good wash. But before you completely wash off the paint, you can, by adding a small amount of water, make foam with the paint and do a final massage, for the most uniform color. Wait 5 minutes and then shower normally.
Tips for longer lasting hair color
There are several ways to maintain your hair color for a longer period of time. Some of them are as follows:
Use products specially designed for colored hair. Shampoos, conditioners and masks that are for colored hair will preserve your color to a greater extent. A mask is important to apply once a week. In this way you "lock" the moisture and also the color inside the hair.
Wash with lukewarm water, as this helps seal the color into the hair. On the contrary, with hot water the scales of the hair open up so that the color fades more easily. Also, don't forget that frequent washing also fades hair. 2 or 3 washes a week is fine.
Heat from styling tools also interferes and reduces the longevity of the color. So avoid them as much as you can.
Make sure to protect your hair as well as your skin from the sun with a special hair sunscreen and a hat.
Extra tips
Avoid dyeing your hair when it is freshly washed. The oils secreted on the head protect the scalp from any irritations.
If it's the first time you dye your hair, do the allergy test before dyeing.
